Ask ten web designers what a website costs and you will get ten different numbers, often without much explanation. That is frustrating when you are trying to set a budget. The honest answer is that small business website cost depends on a handful of specific decisions: how many pages you need, who writes the content, what the site has to do, and who builds it. Once you understand those decisions, the quotes you receive start to make sense, and you can tell a fair price from an inflated or suspiciously cheap one.
Typical Small Business Website Cost Ranges in 2026
The figures below are rough ranges based on what I see quoted to small businesses in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. They vary a lot by region, by the provider’s experience and by the scope, so treat them as a starting point for conversation rather than a price list.
- DIY website builder: roughly USD 15–50 per month for the plan, plus your own time. Cheap in cash, expensive in hours, and you are limited to what the platform allows.
- Simple brochure site (5–8 pages) from a freelancer: often USD 200–1,500. Offshore freelancers sit at the lower end; local freelancers in high-cost cities usually charge more.
- Custom-designed business site (10–20 pages) with a CMS: commonly USD 1,500–6,000 from an experienced freelancer, and noticeably more from an agency.
- Online store: usually starts around USD 1,000–3,000 for a small catalogue and climbs with product count, integrations and custom features.
- Agency-built site with strategy, copywriting and photography: frequently USD 8,000 and up.
For context, websites I build start from about USD 200 for a simple, well-made informative website. That price is possible because of lower operating costs in India, not because steps are skipped. I explained what a budget site at that level does and does not include in this post about building a website for around USD 300.
What Actually Drives the Price
1. Number of unique page layouts
Ten pages that share one layout are cheaper than five pages that each need a different design. When you ask for a quote, list your pages and note which ones are genuinely different (home, service, about, contact) and which are variations of the same thing (individual service pages, locations).
2. Custom design versus a template
A good template adapted to your brand is a perfectly sensible choice for many businesses. A fully custom design costs more because someone has to plan the layout, create mockups and handle revisions. Custom website design makes most sense when your brand needs to stand apart from competitors or when templates simply do not fit your content.
3. Functionality
Every feature beyond basic pages adds time: booking systems, member areas, payment gateways, multilingual content, custom calculators, integrations with a CRM or email platform. Some of these are a plugin and an hour of setup; others are days of custom website development. Ask the developer to price features separately so you can decide what is essential for launch.
4. Content
Content is the most underestimated cost. If you supply finished text and good photos, the project moves quickly. If the developer has to write copy, source images or chase you for material, expect the price and the timeline to grow. Professional copywriting is often billed separately.
5. Who builds it
A solo freelancer, a small studio and a full agency all have different overheads. An agency includes project managers and account staff in its price; a freelancer usually handles everything directly. Neither is automatically better, but the difference shows up in the quote.
Ongoing Costs People Forget
The build is only one part of your small business website cost. A website also has running costs. Budget for these from the start:
- Domain name: typically USD 10–25 per year for a common extension.
- Hosting: anywhere from a few dollars a month for basic shared hosting to USD 30+ per month for managed hosting with better performance and support.
- Premium plugins or themes: some charge yearly licence fees, often USD 30–100 each.
- Maintenance: updates, backups and security checks. You can do this yourself, or pay someone a monthly fee that varies widely depending on what is included.
- Content updates and small changes: either your own time or an hourly rate.
A realistic annual running cost for a small WordPress site is often between USD 100 and USD 600 before any marketing spend, depending on the hosting and support you choose.
How to Keep Costs Under Control
- Write a short brief. One page describing your business, your audience, the pages you need and two or three sites you like. Clear briefs produce accurate quotes.
- Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Launch with what brings in enquiries and add the rest later.
- Prepare your content early. Even rough drafts help the designer plan the layout properly.
- Ask what is included. Revisions, mobile optimisation, basic SEO setup, contact forms, training and post-launch support are not always part of the base price.
- Make sure you own everything. The domain should be registered in your name, and you should have admin access to the hosting and the website.
Red Flags in a Website Quote
A low price is not a problem by itself. These are:
- No written scope, just a single number.
- The developer registers the domain in their own name.
- No mention of mobile responsiveness or how many revision rounds you get.
- Pressure to pay the full amount upfront with no milestones.
- No examples of previous work you can actually visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a USD 200 website worth it?
It can be, if the scope is clear: a small number of pages, your own content, a sensible template-based design and a contact form. It is not realistic for a large custom site or an online store with complex features. The key is knowing exactly what the price includes.
How long does a small business website take to build?
A simple site can be ready in one to three weeks once content is supplied. Larger custom projects often take four to eight weeks or more. Delays usually come from waiting on content and feedback rather than the build itself.
Should I pay monthly or upfront for a website?
Both models exist. Monthly “website as a service” plans spread the cost but can cost more over several years, and you may not own the site if you cancel. A one-off build plus separate hosting usually gives you more control. Read the ownership terms either way.
